What is an SSL Certificate?

An SSL (Security Socket Layer) Certificate, when installed on a web server, activates the HTTPS protocol and enables secure connections from a web server to a web user. An SSL Certificate is used to maintain privacy and protect sensitive information such as transaction passwords, user logins that are shared over the Internet.

A Certificate Authority provides digital certificate to individuals and organizations only after verifying their identity. The certificate assures users that their browser is communicating with the legitimate owners of the web site they intended to go to.

An HTTPS secured website binds a domain name, server name and the identity of the organization.
